The legal minimum tread depth for cars and light vans in the UK is 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, all the way around. Many drivers change tyres well before that.
When to get it checked
- Tread close to the legal limit
- Cuts, bulges or cracks in the sidewall
- A tyre that keeps losing pressure
- Uneven wear on one edge of the tyre
- The tyre pressure warning light is on
